Description

This book tells the story of Camp Huntsville, one of the first and largest prisoner of war camps constructed in America during World War II.  Located nine miles northeast of Huntsville, Texas in  historic Walker County, the camp housed thousands of German prisoners between 1943 and 1945. Then, in a special program at the close of the war, several hundred Japanese prisoners moved to the camp for an intensive re-education program.  This effort to democratize enemy soldiers continued until January 1946, when Japanese POWs were repatriated, and Sam Houston State Teachers College bought and converted the site into a country campus.
